Ireland Squad November 2025

Ireland have named there squad for the 4 games over November where they face New Zealand in Chicago and then 3 games in Dublin facing Japan, Australia and South Africa. Questions have to be asked at this point about certain selections given that the World Cup in Australia in only 2 years away.

The World Cup is not the only show in town of course but a number of players will be wondering what they need to do to get into a squad. Our centres are moving on in age and while they still have plenty to offer where are there challengers, you have guys like James Hume, Cathal Forde, Jude Postlewaite and Dan Kelly naming 4 men that could easily be involved in November.

I know that the here and now is important but future proofing is so important and Ireland have been guilty over the years of not doing that and could easily be without one of those guys selected and then where does Andy Farrell go to select the next man.

Those that played in any of the mini tours of South Africa or the few A games in recent years have to be scratching their heads as to what they need to do to break into the main squad. You can’t wait until injury intervenes to force your hand.

I just hope that those players on the outside continue to perform and make it almost impossible not to select players for the upcoming 6 Nations as well as the November internationals. Andy Farrell needs to be asked why certain players can’t break into a squad.

Age could easily catch Ireland over the next few years, all of our selected centres are well over 30. Those selections don’t scream future to me unfortunately and while the men selected won’t let the jersey down, it is time others got the chance to fight for a spot in the main squad.

Of course, when a coach is selecting a squad his priority would be to get the best players on the field for the games, it some circumstances the squad selected might not be the best one. If Farrell picked a load a new players or lads with single figures in terms of caps he would be fed to the wolves. There was room for some more fresh faces but like most Ireland squads, he went with caution over youth…

Let’s hope, we see more fresh faces over the next 12 months between the November games and 6 Nations of 2026. We do have youth in both the scrum half department and at out half.

Another crack at New Zealand is just over the horizon and that is always a special game in Chicago this time 9 years after the game in Soldier Field before facing Japan, Australia and South Africa in the Aviva Stadium.

Lewis Moody MND Battle

The news of Lewis Moody being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease at the age of 47 defiantly brings things into perspective and again highlights the continued work that rugby will need to do to safeguard it’s future given the proven links between the sport and CTE and diseases like MND, dementia etc.

A growing number of people who were the first true professionals in rugby union are suffering with the effects of concussions and in turn are having to deal with various ailments attached to them. Lewis is only 12 years older than yours truly and it again brings home the true reality of playing a contact sport.

Many of the guys that Lewis faced while playing for England, Leicester Tigers and the British and Irish Lions are in the same boat. Men like Carl Hayman, Ryan Jones and Alix Popham are all in the same boat as Lewis and it highlights the vulnerabilities of the human brain.

The first generation of pro’s who didn’t cross over from the amateur game have begun to retire in the past few years and unfortunately they will be used as test cases to help the game to try and combat against the effects of these diseases into the future.

Only a few weeks ago, Shane Christie was buried in New Zealand after battling the effects of CTE and it has been stated that he suffered a number of concussions through his career. He worked tirelessly in retirement to try and highlight the ongoing issues.

While work is being done by World Rugby to try and help combat against the effects of concussion with stand down periods, in game head injury assessments. One does wonder is that going to be enough for the future of the game of rugby in both union and league.

Some ex players have said they would do it all again in a heartbeat even knowing the risks. Purely from a human stand point it is gut wrenching to see men like Lewis and others come out on National TV  and explain that they have been given the most devastating diagnosis where in the case of MND there is no cure.

Ex team mates of Lewis, Leon Lloyd and Geordan Murphy set up a Go Fund Me page to help Lewis and his family with costs that will be related to the road ahead for the Moody family. It has been a well-trodden path for the families of people over the past number of years.

The Doddie Weir Foundation was set up by Doddie Weir to help families and also assist in research for a cure to be found after his own diagnosis. Lewis has done much fundraising himself in the years since his retirement and now he is looking for some support himself.

I love the game of rugby but in the past few years in the instance of concussions has really hit home. Watching the game either live or on TV you even wince yourself with some of the heavy contact between bodies.

I personally fear that the game could grind to halt at amateur level over the next number of years because parents will say they don’t want their kids involved in the game. Even though the game is built on strong values and morals, I don’t think that will even save it from extinction.

Only time will tell of course but the reality is that both league and union could be heading down a very slippery slope that those in charge at the highest level might not be willing to face but those in the amateur game may be beginning to see the reality of the changing attitudes towards the game of rugby.

I was knocked sideways when seeing the news yesterday and then to realise that he is only 12 years older than myself really made me sit up and take notice. A team mate of his Ed Slater is also suffering from MND and is a few years ahead of Lewis in his battle. He was also only in his 40s when he got his own bad news.

While I still love the game of rugby union and it has given me some of the best moments of my life following Munster in their quest to conquer Europe which came to pass in 2006 and 2008, I am very aware that some of those guys I watched and idolised are now suffering long term health issues attached to playing the game has given me food for thought.

Those in charge must continue to work with those in the medical profession to try and come up with long term solutions that will work for everyone. That of course won’t be easy but if people at all levels just do what they can, like the simple message of If in doubt, sit it out….

My thoughts are with Lewis Moody, his family and friends as well as his team mates at this time. I am also thinking of all of those who suffer from MND and any other health issues similar to that.

After all rugby is only a game with a short shelf life and there is a long life to live post career in both the amateur game as well as in the professional game…..

Tarbert Kerry Junior Club Champions 2025

Tarbert were last night crowned 2025 Junior Club Champions after defeating Beale on a score line of 2-13 (19) to 3-09 (18) in Austin Stack Park in Tralee. This performance was full of grit and determination.

Plenty of pundits in the build-up had said Tarbert needed to win yesterday having been defeated in the last two finals in 2023 and 2024. Tarbert certainly found the answers and it was certainly a case of 3rd time lucky for the squad and mentors.

For the senior men within the Tarbert set up like Shane Enright, Danny Wren, Kevin Enright and Michael Normile this was the cherry on top of the cake given they all were involved in the last big Championship win back in 2010 when the North Kerry Championship was won under Mike Holly and captained by the late Darragh Lanigan.

Certainly what is seldom is wonderful can be attributed to this win, it’s been a while since a county title has come back to Shannon side but the 2025 crop of Tarbert players matched the 1995 County title winning side.

Huge credit has to go to the management team of Eamon Mc Elligott, Jamie Diggins, Mike Carrig and James Cahilane and not forgetting team physio Darren O De.

This group play for each other and when the chips were down last evening and momentum had swung in Beale’s favour Tarbert’s key men stood up, Shane Enright, David Mulvihill along with the tireless efforts of Paudie Finucane and Michael Heaphy around the middle, Heaphy did a fabulous job on Robert Stack in keeping him quiet.

Up front Shaun Wren worked hard while, John Coolahan, Michael Coolahan chipped in with driving runs from  deep. Danny Wren showed his experience and held the middle while the likes of Shane Stack O Gorman, Conor Egan and David Mulivhill drove forward to help Tarbert stay on the front foot….

Beale for their part can be pleased with the efforts over the 60 minutes and while they came up short on the day they can give the North Kerry Championship a real rattle this year. Kenneth Mannix and his management team have a group that will give it’s all for the cause and that was in evidence over the course of yesterday’s game.

From a Tarbert point of view, they have got there just rewards after a few near misses over the past few years. They consolidated there place in Division 3 of the county league  and have a precious piece of silverware to compliment all the hard work.

It was great to see young and old come out in support of Tarbert during the game last night and join in the celebrations that started last night and will continue for the next few days at least…..

Well done to all involved in the club and enjoy the win along with the celebrations of the next while. Last night again showed what the GAA means to people. It really is the bedrock of every parish, village, town or city across the island of Ireland.

A word of recognition too for Sean Carrig team captain, who made a great speech and had a few special words for Darragh Lanigan who was captain when Tarbert won the 2010 North Kerry Championship.

To the whole parish of Tarbert, people living near and far. Enjoy the victory. They are hard earned and not easily won so drink it in and saviour it…….

Tarbert vs Beale Kerry Petroleum Junior Club Championship Final 2025

Tarbert and Beale face each other on Saturday evening in the Kerry Petroleum Junior Club Football Championship Final at 5pm in Austin Stack Park. Both teams had good wins in their respective semi-finals last weekend, Tarbert defeated Moyvane and Beale saw off Cordal.

This will be Tarbert’s 3rd final in this competition having lost out to Reenard in 2023, Duagh in 2024 so they will be hell bent on making it third time lucky on Saturday evening in Tralee.  They will be led by Shane Enright who is in the autumn of his footballing career but still performing well when called upon for the men in the red and black…

Tarbert won 2 of their 3 games in group phase only drawing one game and that set them up with a home quarter final that saw Lispole visit Shannon Park and Tarbert coming through as winners on the day, they faced Moyvane and again came out winners in an evenly contested game in Coolard last Sunday in the semi-final.

Beale will provide strong opposition as they will be looking to win a county title themselves and moving up the grade at county level in Kerry. The prize is a big one for both sides come 5pm Saturday evening in Austin Stack Park.

It is also another chance for both sides to play in Austin Stack Park which should inspire both squads to go above and beyond themselves in search of a county title. The excitement is building of course in both parishes and as the week ticks by the final in becoming the only ticket in town.

Having secured there place in Division 3 of next year’s County League, Tarbert drove on and worked hard to fight their way back to the final of this competition for the 3rd successive year and with a bit of luck they will cross the finishing line this weekend.

Of course many ex-players, mentors and supporters will make the trip to Tralee to roar on Tarbert, it will be a case of planes, trains and automobiles and any other way to get to the final. To the players, it is simple go out and do your best in search of victory.

Tarbert have put in very strong displays this year and will be able to lean on previous final experience as preparations move on this week.

A county title no matter the grade is a special one to win and they don’t come along too often so enjoy the occasion and don’t let it pass you by…. As the old saying goes, “Do it for the Parish”.

Best wishes to Eamon, Jamie, James and Mike and the entire panel on Saturday evening…..

Munster Season 25/26

Munster go into the new season with Clayton Mc Millan taking over as head coach after he took over from Ian Costello who had taken the reins from Graham Rowntree in October of 2024.

With this fresh start bringing fresh hope that Munster will get close to winning a League title last won in 2023. They are certainly capable of going for a league title but will need to be far more consistent than last year if they are to wrestle the trophy away from Leinster.

Munster will be away to Scarlets in week 1 of the campaign and that will be followed by 3 games of the next 4 on home soil the only away fixture will be in Croke Park against Leinster.

Given they could have had a tour away in South Africa to begin the year, looking at the games over the opening rounds they are very manageable and Mr Mc Millan will hope his charges can hit the ground running.

Europe could be that much trickier given the lack of strength in depth Munster have, yes they will have everyone back from injury both long term absentees and short term also.

The return of Roman Salanoa from injury will be a massive boost, he along with Ronan Fox will provide competition for Oli Jager who himself will hope for a good run without injury in the early part of the new campaign, not forgetting Lee Barron and Michael Milne who joined from Leinster both on 2 year deals.

Dan Kelly has joined on a 2 year deal from Leicester Tigers and will provide welcome competition for the pairing of Tom Farrell and Alex Nankivell who were the chosen centres in the big games last season when injury or suspension didn’t rule Nankivell out.

JJ Hanrahan has re-joined for third spell in red and his experience will take the pressure off Jack Crowley and will hopefully help the two other 10s currently in the set up Dylan Hicks and Tony Butler to advance and put pressure of the senior pair for a place in the match day 23 as the season goes ahead.

Up front, men like Evan O Connell and Tom Ahern will want to establish themselves on a weekly basis as will Brian Gleeson while young tyros like Luke Murphy and Ruan Quinn will want to continue the good work of recent years. Michael Foy will want to push on after some good showings in green in the recent Junior World Cup.

The coaching team will hope that with this new start that they can move ahead and maybe tweak things both in defence under Denis Leamy and in attack under Mike Predergast. Munster will want to be water tight in defence while trying new things in attack.

When things went well in attack last year they were great, La Rochelle away springs to mind straight off but then early in the year against Leinster in Croker. They failed to fire even after a bright start. So consistency will be the name of the game for Munster in the new campaign.

The new season will start on Friday week away to Gloucester who they will also face in the Champions Cup before playing Bath in Cork the following week, who are to face Munster in Europe later in the year.

They were due to play Biarritz in France during pre-season but that game fell through unfortunately. Another link to Munster’s first win in Europe which will be marked this season as it will be 20 years in May 2026 since the famous 23-19 win over Biarritz in Cardiff….

Mam 9 years

I wrote a piece to mark 9 years since Mam passed away back in June. Hard to think it is 9 years since Mam came home from work and within minutes was battling to stay alive. My reason for penning this particular piece is to give a warts and all view from my perspective of that day and the time since.

Next Sunday evening at 6.40pm, I will mark the exact moment that Mam suffered her brain injury that 3 days later took her from her family at the age of 49. In the time since Mam passed away, life has changed. I am out on my own and I am writing and hoping to go back recording soon.

The biggest change for me is that I am fully in control of my life and that is what Mam always wanted. I look at myself and think back to the time 9 years ago and I can see a very different person looking back at me when I look at the mirror.

The events of that evening have had a lasting impact both positive and negative but with professional support as well as the loyal support of many people, I have managed to create a life for myself.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing, I give off the impression that nothing ever affected me when in fact things were on top of me for a large portion of the past few years but thank god that has all began to turn over recent years and I can see the light.

I know I can be an awkward fella but I never set out to be that way, I am trying very hard to change but like with most habits it is hard to change from what is drilled into my head. As I say I am working hard to complete that particular change to my personality.

I want to say to anyone that may have fallen out with friends or family over the past while, If you feel it might be worth fighting for that relationship, do so because life can change in an instant. Take it from someone who bought that t shirt. Fix it now and try to move forward….

I will also apologise to anyone now, if I seem distracted from next Sunday until the following Wednesday. While time has passed and things have gotten easier with the passage of time, certain moments are still very fresh in my mind….

The level of support I continue to receive from people who do it quietly and without fuss won’t ever be forgotten. I can’t thank those people enough for what they have done for me and continue to do. I will continue to live my life the way I see fit and if that doesn’t suit people then tough….

I have always tried to do my best for people and to be there for people if they needed someone. I will continue to be that listening ear if anyone needs someone to listen… For that small group of people who still look out for yours truly, thank you all from the bottom of my heart !!!

To Mam, its 9 years since you left this world but your influence on me continues to this very day…. Look after yourself wherever you are and thank you for everything……

Media Training Gone Wrong

Over recent years I have seen the rise of people in the media using certain words when describing a team for which they played for in the past. Words like “us”, “them” and “we”. Those in the media need to realise that they are there to deliver an opinion and not tell us about “there” club or team.

Also the use of nicknames by ex-team mates when speaking of players is another thing that both TV and Radio companies need to speak to those who they employ.

The ordinary punter hasn’t a clue who you’re speaking of unless you are completely tuned in to every sport. Some people correct themselves as soon as they realise they have done it but more don’t and need to be pulled up on it.

Even with basic media training you are told to be keep it clear and concise and not to waffle. That particular aspect of being in the media is being lost in translation.

I know too that anyone with a phone and mic is an amateur journalist and thinks they know what they are doing. Take it from someone who did the courses and has the t shirt. It certainly isn’t easy.

While the ex-pros know what they are speaking of in terms of the sport some of them really need to go back to finishing school in media terms.  Stop using terms that are only familiar to you and using nicknames when talking of players you may know personally or might have played with during your career.

It is not acceptable in other walks of life so those same standards should be expected on TV and on Radio. More organisations are guilty of it than others but let’s hope that those long held traditions and standards I speak of start to return over the next while.

I have to be honest and say I have a feeling they won’t but we can always hold out hope. Let this be the moment where people realise they are there to give us an informed opinion and not tell us with regularity about the love they have for “there” club or team.

In previous years, it might be the odd slip but over the last few years those slips have become more frequent and bloody annoying. If you want to profess your love of a player or team stick to team based media or fan based podcasts etc.

Some people will say, that is what makes it exciting when presenters give their side of things but you are not trained that way, well at least I wasn’t. Give an opinion yes but keep it down the middle. I know that local radio and local media can be biased but that is slightly different on occasion. When in national press, you are held to different standards.

With the advent of social media over the past 18 years in particular, every person has access to give us an opinion. Rightly or wrongly of course but that is what the modern world has given us with the internet becoming very powerful in terms of how content is accessed and sent to the masses so quickly.

In the past, it took time for news to travel but now it is instant and you don’t have time to digest one piece of news before your faced with another, each one most likely harder to stomach than the last.

I just hope that people will start to return to the old standards of giving an informed opinion and not just a sound bite. Standards have dropped but with a genuine reset, we can turn it around. Wishful thinking given what is happening worldwide currently but it is the hope we need to cling onto….

Lions defeated in weather delayed 3rd Test

Australia win a weather delayed third test 22-12 to show the fighting quality that is a hall mark of sport not alone Australian sport. Australia are fully deserving of the win in the third test and like last week, the win can be attested to Joe Schmidt and his ability to fire up a team and give them a game plan that is hard working and you need to be extremely clear in how to execute the game plan.

Men like Nick White, Will Skelton and Taniela Tupou led from the front from minute 1 and got stuck in and that defiantly upset the Lions rhythm and when Dan Sheehan began to lose his momentum at the line out and Tupou was winning his battle with Andrew Porter at the scrum.

All those little moments led to Australia getting in front and not surrendering the lead at any point and although the score line reads 22-14 at full time, Australia will know they left a couple of chances behind them. You can say the Lions minds were already on the beach given they had snuck a late win in the 2nd Test last weekend but knowing how Andy Farrell likes to do things, he would have wanted to win the series 3-0.

Australia manged to dig a well-earned win out and can go into the opening round of the Rugby Championship in 2 weeks’ time against South Africa with a shot of confidence. They were very close to winning last week’s 2nd test and only for the late intervention of Hugo Keenan to get over and seal a late 29-26 win, this win today could have had a very different meaning.

The weather delay at the start of the second half had the desired did not overly affect either side, it saw Ellis Genge in to replace Andrew Porter and that had the desired effect on the scrum that saw a slight reversal in fortunes and a number of penalties going to the Lions.

The Lions started to slowly build into the game without a functioning line out that had trouble before Maro Itoje went off but did continue to struggle as the game went on. Australia for there part kept moving the ball around and kept things flowing and allowing themselves through their own good play as well as Lions indiscipline to keep them on the front foot.

Today again showed that top level sport really is only a game of inches and if your only even a small bit off it how it can effect things in an overall sense. From an Australian point of view they can take today’s complete performance and refer back to it over the next few weeks.

They will have a new forwards coach as Geoff Parling now moves on to take the top job at Leicester Tigers, they will also have Les Kiss most likely beginning to put his stamp on the team heading into the Rugby Championship.

Joe Schmidt although they didn’t win the series, they won in a test game and the manner in which  they saw it through will do no harm. They do have a base to work from and now they need to get things sorted upstairs in ARU HQ.

There may be bumpy days ahead but the wheel might slowly begin to turn now and it is up to all involved in Australian rugby to put the shoulder to the wheel and move forward together.

For the Lions, it is a first series win since Australia in 2013 and they can bask in the glory of the achievement. Maro Itoje has led the Lions to a series win.

Andy Farrell has guided the Lions to series win. He has had such an impact on the whole organisation since his announcement last year, he and his coaching staff will look back on a job well done. They didn’t win the series 3-0 but if you gave Farrell a test series win he would have taken your hand off…

They can enjoy a few days in each other’s company now to celebrate and take stock of what has been achieved. These players will now get some well-earned and deserved time off to celebrate with family and friends and then they can all just switch off from rugby for a couple of weeks.

The stated aim of a series win has been secured and Australia provided a win and close fought series. While the Lions brand will continue to be questioned and it’s place in the modern day game will also be spoken about, they provide vital revenue for the competing union, namely Australia on this occasion and New Zealand is next up in 2029…
